Why Civil Engineering Training Should Be Built to Scale

Back when I was leading a team, every time we were ready to hire, I felt the same thing. We needed more people, but how were we going to train them fast enough? I needed the help now, but I didn't have time to train another person, let alone two.

This is the fifth of the seven learning needs for civil engineers: built to scale.

The hard part of hiring

If you've worked in this industry, you've probably felt this pain too. A new hire is always going to cost money, and everyone knows that. The harder part is finding anyone with the time to train them. Figuring it out as you go works on a small team, and it's easy enough to train one person. The more you grow, the harder it is to keep doing what you were doing before, and that's when things start to fall apart.

Why it matters

Built to scale means the training grows with your team, so hiring a second or even a third person doesn't mean taking your senior engineer completely offline.

Follow along for the sixth learning need, coming next week.
