Transforming the Future: Explaining Civil 3D to the Next Generation

Engineering transforms our world. Have you ever wondered what that actually looks like?



This Engineers Week, the theme is "Transform Your Future." One of the best ways we can get young people interested in Engineering is by finding less complex and more engaging ways to explain the work we do, and better yet, what tools we use every day.


AutoCAD Civil 3D is a powerful tool in the Civil Engineering industry. It takes time to learn and master its complexity, but understanding what the tool is actually used for helps us visualize our work and gain a better understanding of how we build the world around us.

I wanted to share a simple diagram that shows the main components of Civil 3D and how they all relate to and build on each other.


I encourage you to share this with a student or a young person in your life. Talk through the steps. Showing them that a Civil Engineering project is just a series of simple, logical layers is how we inspire the next generation of engineers.


Points These are the building blocks. Every design starts by defining a specific location in space defined in all directions, both horizontal and vertical.


Surfaces We connect all of those points to create a mesh. This is our digital version of the ground.


Feature Lines and Grading This is where we get creative. We sculpt the land, telling the system how the ground should slope and drain.


Alignments and Profiles We define the path. This is the horizontal and vertical route for a roadway or sidewalk.


Corridors We take the alignment and profile path we created and add a cross-section of the road to it. The software then automatically generates the 3D model of what that road actually is.


Pipe Networks There is a lot happening underground that we don't see. Aside from the roads and sidewalks, there is a connected series of pipes and structures that provide needed utilities like wastewater, stormwater, and drinking water. This allows us to model those systems underground while referencing the ground we built above.



The Takeaway

When we take the time to share the how and the why of our work, we grow an appreciation for the world we build. It is how we make our communities better one empowered future engineer at a time.
